Sam Whatley, author of Paper Moon Bay's YA and new adult fiction

About Me

I write for the kid I used to be: the one who read under the covers looking for a character who felt like them, and didn't always find one.

My books are young adult and new adult fiction, coming of age stories about first love, chosen family, and the messy, brilliant work of figuring out who you are. Many of them are LGBTQ+ at their core, and none of them shy away from the hard stuff, but they always, always end with hope.

Because here's what I believe, and what runs through everything I write: acceptance, tolerance for people who see the world differently than you do, and knowing that no matter how much of an outsider you feel like, you still matter. That's not a subplot in my work. It's the whole spine of it.

Before books, storytelling looked a little different for me. I co-hosted an internet TV station, and I wrote a short apocalyptic series for the SyFy channel. Different formats, same instinct: I've always been drawn to telling stories, and to the people who feel like they don't quite fit the one they've been handed.

I'm based in the UK. I write from a desk that's permanently buried in tea mugs and sticky notes, and I publish my books through my own imprint, Wholespire, so I can keep telling exactly the stories I want to tell. No gatekeepers, no watering things down.

If any of that sounds like your kind of thing, come in. Pull up a chair. There's room for you here.
