Elias Vance has never had a life that belonged to him. As the son of a rising political figure, every photo, every civics class, every carefully pinned campaign badge has been part of a script written for him long before he had a say in it. He knows how to smile for the cameras. He doesn't know how to want anything for himself.

Tyler Hayes doesn't smile for anyone. Written off by half the town because of a father everyone assumes is guilty, Tyler has learned to expect nothing and trust no one — least of all a politician's son with a spreadsheet for a personality. When a school assignment forces them into an unlikely partnership — restoring a derelict community centre that the town has spent years pretending doesn't exist — neither of them expects to find anything real underneath all that performance and armour.

But the summer that starts as an assignment neither of them wanted quietly turns into something neither of them is prepared to lose. As Elias starts asking harder questions about his father's campaign, and as the truth about Tyler's father's conviction begins to unravel in ways that could take down an entire political empire, the two boys find themselves at the centre of something far bigger than a fundraiser — a fight for the truth, for a building worth saving, and for the right to write their own ending instead of the one everyone else assumed for them.

The Boys Who Broke The Script is a YA political thriller wrapped around a slow-burn romance — about class, corruption, the families we're born into versus the ones we choose, and what it costs to stop performing the life other people expect of you.

Meet The Characters

Elias, a character from The Boys Who Broke The Script by Sam Whatley

Elias Vance

Sixteen, immaculately put-together, and quietly suffocating under the weight of his father's political ambitions. Elias has spent his life being managed — his image, his schedule, even his opinions — by a family more concerned with optics than honesty. Polished, organised, and instinctively conflict-avoidant, Elias has never been given the room to ask what he actually wants.

His partnership with Tyler, and the community centre restoration that follows, becomes the first thing in his life that isn't about performance — and uncovering the truth about his father forces Elias to choose, for the first time, between the comfortable script he's always followed and the harder, truer version of himself.

Tyler Hayes

Seventeen, guarded, and carrying a leather jacket like armour rather than fashion. Tyler has grown up in the shadow of his father's imprisonment and the town's assumption that guilt runs in the family. Sharp-tongued, quick to expect the worst, and fiercely loyal to the few people who've earned it, Tyler's defensiveness is a survival mechanism built from years of being underestimated and written off.

Over the course of the story, Tyler allows himself — cautiously, and then completely — to hope again: for his father's name to be cleared, for a building worth fighting for, and for a boy he never expected to let this close.
